Faraji’s Forest Garden: A Story of Growth and Opportunity in Usambara

In the Usambara mountains of Tanzania, Faraji has turned his forest garden into a source of food, income, and hope. With support from GiftTrees, he has learned to farm sustainably, combining tree planting, crop cultivation, and beekeeping into a single system.

Managing Trees Crops And Bees Together

Faraji’s forest garden includes bananas, avocados, river tamarind, and flowering peas. Unlike many farmers who focus solely on planting or harvesting, Faraji manages both simultaneously.

His trees provide shade, improve soil health, and serve as habitat for bees, which are a key part of his farm.

Beekeeping As A Source Of Income

Today, Faraji has 65 beehives. They produce 35 to 40 litres of honey per season, twice a year. This honey earns him around 800,000 Tanzanian Shillings (about $345 USD) every six months.

He also uses the honey to expand his small shop in Lushoto town, where he now employs two people.

Supporting A Family And Planning For The Future

The forest garden has changed life for Faraji and his family of six. The income from crops and honey allows him to meet basic needs such as food and school fees and gives him the opportunity to plan for the future.

By carefully arranging his crops and beehives, he protects his farm from animals and makes the most of his land.

Sustainable Farming That Strengthens Communities

Faraji’s success shows how sustainable farming and tree planting can transform communities. With the right training and support, forest gardens can provide reliable income, restore land, and strengthen families, one tree and one farm at a time.
