Mpale: Reducing Pressure on Forests, One Tree at a Time

Learn how agroforestry in Mpale Ward is reducing pressure on natural forests while creating income, jobs, and long-term resilience through the Forest Focus Plant to Stop Poverty initiative.

Agroforestry Reducing Pressure On Forests In Mpale

In Mpale Ward, near the Migomani Forest Reserve, unsustainable timber harvesting has long threatened local ecosystems.

Planting Trees To Protect Natural Forests

As part of the Forest Focus Plant to Stop Poverty (PSP) initiative, 72,000 agroforestry trees were planted across four villages in January 2025, covering more than 22 square kilometres.

Species such as jackfruit, avocado, cinnamon, guava, passion fruit, and mango were selected to provide long-term sources of timber, food, and income, thereby reducing dependence on natural forests.

Community Engagement And Job Creation

The project engaged 9 villages and 115 families, creating 55 new jobs and equipping farmers with skills in eco-friendly land use.

By combining environmental restoration with economic opportunity, Mpale is laying the groundwork for a future where forests are protected and livelihoods are secure. This is conservation with community at its core.
