Restoring Eroding Coastlines And Sea Life With GiftTrees

Restoring Eroding Coastlines And Sea Life With GiftTrees

Eroding land and declining sea life are not distant environmental issues. For coastal communities in Pangani, Tanzania, they have been a daily reality for years. As mangrove forests degraded, land crumbled, fish stocks diminished, and livelihoods were placed at risk.

Through partnership and action, that story is beginning to change.

From Devastation To Restoration In Pangani

For a long time, mangrove forests in Pangani served as a natural shield for the coastline. As they declined, communities were left exposed to erosion and environmental instability. Soil degradation increased, and fishing livelihoods suffered as marine habitats disappeared.

Thanks to the partnership with GiftTrees, restoration efforts are now underway. Local communities are actively involved in rebuilding mangrove forests and restoring balance along the coastline.

What Is Happening On The Ground

With support from GiftTrees, Forest Focus is leading community-based mangrove restoration in the Pangani district. The project focuses on restoring degraded coastal land while strengthening local resilience.

Current efforts include the planting of 180,000 native mangrove trees. Species such as Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina, which are native to the Pangani region, are being planted to support long-term ecological recovery.

As these mangroves establish, coastal erosion is slowing, and land is beginning to stabilise. Fish stocks are already starting to return as habitats recover. At the same time, carbon is being drawn from the atmosphere, supporting climate change mitigation efforts.

Why Mangroves Matter For Communities And Nature

Mangroves play a vital role in protecting coastlines by acting as natural barriers against erosion. They also provide essential breeding habitats for fish and crabs, supporting local fishing livelihoods.

Beyond environmental benefits, mangroves contribute to community resilience through sustainable use. Restoration efforts are creating jobs, improving food security, and supporting long-term stability for families who depend on coastal ecosystems.

According to Forest Focus, ecological benefits such as reduced erosion and increased fish stocks are expected within one to two years. Full mangrove recovery and carbon sequestration benefits are expected to develop over five to ten years. However, the positive impact on communities is already being felt.

Every GiftTree Supports Recovery

Every GiftTree planted in Pangani contributes to this recovery. Each funded tree contributes to environmental restoration and strengthens community development. The work is driven by local people, supported by partners, and made possible through continued collaboration.

As David Cosmas, Assistant Executive Director at Forest Focus, explains, this support is restoring the environment while boosting community development across the region. The coastline in Pangani was crumbling. Sea life was disappearing. Today, restoration is underway, and hope is returning. Through GiftTrees, vulnerable coastlines are being rebuilt, marine habitats are recovering, and communities are gaining resilience. One tree at a time, land is stabilised, fish stocks are supported, and futures are strengthened.

This is what happens when people come together to do something good for the planet and the communities that depend on it.
