Project Update: 95% Early Survival Rate
In April 2023, supported by GiftTrees, the Friends of Usambara Forest Gardens project in Tabora officially began, bringing together 480 families to create sustainable agroforestry plots under the guidance of GiftTrees and Carbon Free Dining.
Our recent visit on 13th June 2023, led by Farm Lead Technician Upendo Thobias, revealed inspiring progress on the ground.

Early Successes In Tree Survival
Despite being only a few months into the project, 100 trees were planted, with an impressive 95% survival rate. The species include:
Avocado (Persea americana)
Banana (Musa sp.)
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)
Pepper (Capsicum annuum)
Onion (Allium cepa)
These crops not only provide nutritious food for families but also generate sustainable income through local markets.
A Farmer’s Journey Denis Msagati
One standout participant, Denis Msagati, recently joined the Forest Gardens family and quickly embraced agroforestry practices.
During his first five weeks, Denis learned about:
Soil management and crop spacing
Permaculture gardening
Artificial propagation
On his one-acre plot, Denis has already diversified his planting with three fruit tree species, established a compost pile, and created a permaculture garden.
Smart Land Management On Sloped Terrain
Avocado Food Shade And Soil Health
Denis chose to prioritise avocado trees due to their high nutritional and economic value. Just a few avocado trees could provide food for his family of five while supporting his fruit stall in the local market.
Beyond food, avocado trees also play a key role in:
Nitrogen fixation
Carbon sequestration
Providing shade to protect other crops
Looking Ahead For The Forest Gardens Project
The Forest Gardens project is off to a promising start, and a team of technicians will continue to monitor progress and provide guidance and support as the plots mature.
Each tree and crop planted is a step toward food security, income generation, and environmental resilience for families in Tabora.
This project is a clear example of how small-scale agroforestry can create a lasting impact, strengthening communities while restoring the environment.
