The Cuvette System Transforming Avocado Farming and Food Security

In rural communities, simple but innovative farming techniques are making a meaningful difference. One such approach is the Cuvette System, a practical method that helps farmers protect their crops, manage water more effectively, and improve harvest outcomes in challenging conditions.

For farmers like Rahim, this system has transformed both his land and his livelihood.

What Is A Cuvette System?

A Cuvette System involves creating a protective soil barrier around the base of a tree. Farmers collect nearby soil and shape it into a raised ring around the tree’s berm. This structure is designed to control runoff, reduce soil erosion, and retain soil moisture.

Before adopting the Cuvette System, farms in Rahim’s community faced serious challenges. Heavy water runoff would waterlog fields, destroying up to 30 per cent of crops and exposing tree roots to intense sun. These conditions significantly reduced tree survival rates and limited long-term productivity.

Protecting Soil and Supporting Tree Growth

The Cuvette design acts as a defence against erosion while maintaining consistent moisture around the tree. By slowing water movement and keeping it close to the roots, the soil remains hydrated longer, even under difficult conditions.

This simple change has had a profound impact on tree health. With roots protected and moisture levels stabilised, trees are better able to survive and grow through dry and unpredictable seasons.

Increased Harvests and Stronger Food Security

Thanks to the Cuvette System, Rahim’s avocado trees are now thriving. He can expect to harvest 300-500 avocados per tree each season. This improvement provides him with an additional $350 to $530 in income per season.

For Rahim and his neighbours, these results mean more than higher yields. They deliver stronger food security, greater financial stability, and increased confidence in their farms' future.

A Simple System With Lasting Impact

The Cuvette System shows how straightforward farming techniques can deliver powerful results. By protecting soil, conserving water, and improving tree survival, this approach helps entire communities build more resilient food systems.

What began as a practical response to erosion and water loss has transformed landscapes and lives. For farmers like Rahim, the Cuvette System has proven successful and continues to support a more secure and prosperous future.
