For Mziha, life once meant surviving on just a few dollars a day. Cassava was central to everything, providing food for her children, helping maintain a safe home, and supporting access to education. Today, through GiftTrees agroforestry training, her story is changing.

How Agroforestry Training Is Empowering Mziha

Through the Maendeleo GiftTrees training group, Mziha has gained practical agricultural knowledge in forest-garden crop production. With this training, she now grows two healthy cassava harvests each year, providing both nutrition and income for her family.

Each cassava plant she tends produces 10-12 nutrient-rich roots per season. The stems can be chopped and replanted, allowing another harvest to grow within six months. This cycle provides a reliable, renewable food source that supports long-term stability.

Cassava As A Source Of Nutrition And Income

Cassava plays a vital role in Mziha’s household. It is a rich source of nutrition, providing up to 40 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams, along with fibre, vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, and magnesium. These nutrients are essential sources of energy and nourishment for families like Mziha’s.

The impact of cassava goes beyond nutrition. With only a short window before the root vegetable perishes, Mziha walks the village roads trading cassava with local community members. Each kilogram can earn up to 5,000 Tanzanian shillings, enabling her to generate as much as 750,000 Tanzanian shillings per season.

This income is life-changing. It allows Mziha to send her children to school and meet her family’s basic daily needs with greater security and confidence.
