Learning Faster Growing Methods Through Top Grafting

GiftTrees training programmes introduce fruit farmers to top grafting techniques for crops such as avocado and mango. This method significantly reduces the time it takes for trees to begin producing fruit.

Traditionally, fruit trees require up to 14 years before harvest begins. Through top grafting, farmers can reduce this timeline to just three to four years, allowing them to start earning income much sooner.

How Top Grafting Works in Practice

Top grafting involves selecting a healthy scion and carefully inserting it into a prepared cut at the top of a young sapling. The joint is then wrapped to protect it from water and support the successful joining of the plant tissues.

Protecting the joint is essential. If water enters the grafted area, the new tree will not form correctly. When done properly, the grafted sapling develops into a strong fruit-producing tree that combines resilience with faster growth.

This technique is commonly applied to avocado and mango seedlings. Once grafted, farmers can expect to begin harvesting fruit within three to four years, rather than waiting more than a decade.

Earlier Harvests and Quicker Income for Families

By learning and applying top grafting techniques, farming communities are already seeing results. These methods have helped farmers develop more than 150,000 new fruit varieties, creating earlier opportunities to sell produce and generate income.
